On The Hopeless Romantic
...She looked at the paper she held in her hand and the only word she saw before she tore it into billions of pieces was, "Society."...
Every time Randy whispered into her ears the words 'I love you'...she died a little bit more inside. Those words were a constant reminder of the lie she was living. She was obliged to say them back, as do couples, till death did them part, but deep inside, Mia knew she couldn't ever love again. Love, to her, was dead.
Before Randy came along, Mia had met a girl, beautiful in all aspects according to her. They say nobody's perfect? Well, this being was solely made for her, made from her missing rib. She was simply her Eve. Abby was her name. They started off as just friends, progressed to best friends, then the greatest of lovers. You know that feeling of having someone who gets you like crazy? Well, they would stay up all night talking about life, about love, about practically everything (on WhatsApp obviously since they were both still in their late teen years and lived with their mamas and papas.) Well, they didn't exactly share the same interests in movie and song genres, neither did they share the same career interest as Abby wanted to pursue Law [this btw made Mia more intrigued by Abby as she was sapiosexual] and Mia was more of an artistic person. Their zodiac signs were also at the very least compatible as Abby was a Gemini and Mia a Scorpio, but they had a flame, no, an inferno, burning in their souls with pure love for each other. Not for a second did Mia think they would ever part ways. She sometimes even dreamt of them getting married. Never for a moment did she think they would break up, but honestly, no one ever does.
Then came trouble in paradise, Abby became unusually" busy", grey-ticking her WhatsApp texts, not wanting to meet up with her as often as they used to, not wanting to be seen with her in public, not...you know all that cliche stuff. One lazy afternoon, they met up at their favourite park and teary Abby said, "Mia, I don't wanna be homosexual anymore... I... I just can't." They stared into each other's eyes and all Mia could see was the purest form of Love in Abby's. Abby then placed a piece of paper in Mia's palm and turned back to leave. Mia just stood there. She wanted to call after her but she was dumbfounded, running after her was out of the question since she felt lightheaded. She didn't understand, She couldn't understand, was it a choice one was able to make? If it were up to her, she would never have thought of being gay. Staying in the closet for most of her life, if not all, cause being gay in an African environment wasn't at all easy, she couldn't help loving Abby, and Abby wasn't the first "she" she'd ever crushed on, only the first who had made her feel at peace, who for a moment there gave her a tinge of hope, who had made her find solace, and now this?! Slowly, rage built within her. She looked at the paper she held in her hand and the only word she saw before she tore it into billions of pieces was, "Society."
